Town colonials and rural ranches want different math, and the old unit's nameplate is not the answer — it was probably oversized when new. A proper heat-loss calculation (square footage, insulation, windows, existing radiation) sets the size. For rural properties, it also has to account for exposure: a house on an open lot faces wind loads a sheltered town colonial never sees.
On propane replacements, sizing has a second dimension: tank sizing. An undersized propane tank can't vaporize fast enough in extreme cold no matter how good the boiler is. If deep-freeze weakness is why you're replacing, the new tank belongs in the project scope.
