Boiler Has No Heat on a Cold Night: 5 Safe Checks Before You Call

A cold house at night feels urgent, and it can be. These five safe checks help you describe the problem clearly so help arrives faster.

Need help now? Call (888) 766-1474 — the emergency telephone line is answered 24/7.

First, confirm what "no heat" actually means

A precise description gets you better help than "the boiler is broken."

Before you touch anything, take one minute to notice the pattern. Is every room cold, or only one zone? Are radiators stone cold, or lukewarm? Is there hot water even though the heating is off? Each answer points the person on the phone in a different direction, and it keeps you from waiting through questions you could have answered in advance.

Also note when the heat stopped. Did it fade during the evening, or was the house already cold when you came home? A system that quit overnight in a hard freeze is treated differently from one that has been struggling for a week.

Five safe checks you can make tonight

Observation only — nothing here opens the boiler or changes its settings beyond the controls meant for homeowners.

If anything below involves a gas smell, skip the rest of the list: leave the property and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not relight anything or keep investigating.

  • Thermostat setting and mode. Confirm it is set to heat, not cool or off, and that the target temperature sits above the room temperature. A thermostat knocked to a low setting or left in a hold pattern is a common, harmless cause.
  • Power to the boiler. Check that the boiler switch is on and that no breaker for the heating circuit has tripped. If a breaker trips again after you reset it once, leave it off and call.
  • Display and fault code. Look at the boiler display without opening any panel. If it shows a fault code or a lockout light, note the exact code. Do not reset the boiler repeatedly; a lockout is a safety stop, and repeated resets hide the fault.
  • Pressure gauge reading. Glance at the gauge and note the number. You do not need to adjust anything — a reading near zero, or one that has fallen sharply, is useful information for the call, not a job to fix at midnight.
  • Radiator pattern. Feel two or three radiators, top and bottom. Every radiator cold points one way; one cold zone points another. That pattern is the single most useful detail you can report.

That is the whole list. Anything beyond it — opening panels, adjusting internal controls, or working on fuel lines — belongs to a technician, especially at night and especially in a cold house where pipes are already at risk.

When to call right away, and what to say

Some no-heat situations can wait until morning. These cannot.

Call the emergency line now if the house is losing heat fast in freezing weather, if there is any smell of gas, if water is visible anywhere near the boiler, or if the boiler has locked out more than once. Frozen pipes can burst and cause far more damage than the original heating fault, so a rapidly cooling house in a freeze is itself the emergency, even if nothing looks dramatic at the boiler.

While you wait, keep interior doors open so any remaining warmth reaches pipes in colder rooms. Do not treat a dripping tap as a substitute for a call in a hard freeze; it may slow pipe damage in one spot while the house keeps cooling overall.

When you call (888) 766-1474, say the symptoms in this order: which rooms are cold, when the heat stopped, the fault code if one is showing, the pressure reading if you noted it, and whether hot water still works. That short report lets the dispatcher judge urgency in seconds.
